Polish MS study shows interesting results

Scientists, lead by Prof. Krzysztof Selmaj from Lodz in Poland (Europe) have discovered a new treatment method of MS through the skin.
The results were presented during 26. ECTRIMS 2010 in Gothenburg, Sweden • 13-16 October 2010 .
Tests were prepared on a group of 30 patients and 20 of them had bandaids (adhesive tape) with 3 types of proteins and 10 of them had a placebo. In early treatment bandaids were changed once per week and later on once per month. Occurred, that myelin antigens stimulate creation of regulatory immune skin cells (so called dendrite cells). And next they are moved to lymph nodes, where they teach auto-aggressive lymphocytes how to recognise myelin proteins as “good”. One can say that dendrite cells teach lymphocytes a proper behaviour, which can ease auto-aggressive reactions among MS patients. Scientists through the biopsy has proved the presence of immune cells in lymph nodes which tolerate myelin proteins.

MRI scans have proved, that patients with “protein bandaids” have less MS lesions and frequency of MS exacerbations has also decreased after one year of tests. They did not observes any side effects so far.

These research tests granted by Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education were done with cooperation of scientists from Jagiellonian University, Cracow , Poland.
